The flightless rhea lays the world’s second largest eggs.  Unlike the round eggs of the ostrich, the rhea’s are conventional in shape with a cream-coloured shell that is much thinner but still very strong.  Rhea’s eggshells are not as easy to obtain as those of the ostrich but are a pleasure to work with, particularly as the thin hard shell lends itself ideally to filigree work not featured in this design.
